George Ryder Stakes

One of the most popular races of the coveted Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival is the George Ryder Stakes, a prestigious Group 1 thoroughbred race held at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Golden Slipper Day. With stakes set at over AUD $400,000, it is no surprise so many avid race fans have been turning out to the legendary race that has taken place since 1903.

The Group 1 George Ryder Stakes is held on the first Saturday in April and is one of five brilliant Group 1 races held at the meeting. The other big feature events of the day are the Golden Slipper, The BMW, Vinery Stud Stakes and the Queen of the Turf Stakes. For the running of the 2013 George Ryder Stakes, Golden Slipper Day will take place on Saturday April 6, 2013.

A middle-distance sprint over 1600m, the George Ryder Stakes is run under weight-for-age conditions and a legacy of truly gifted riders and horses that have competed in the event over the years.

Some of the world’s best gallopers have seen success in the George Ryder Stakes including Weekend Hussler (2008), Racing To Win (2006) and Schillaci (1993), who is regarded as one of the finest gallopers in Australian history by many Aussie horse racing enthusiasts.

One of the other reasons that the George Ryder Stakes riders and horses are so important within the world of horse racing is due to the fact that the race is often looked at as an indicator for other races that will follow during the circuit.

For example, many horses and riders that have won or done well in the George Ryder Stakes have also gone on to do well or win other prominent races such as the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) in two weeks time at Randwick. The winner of the George Ryder Stakes is exempt from ballot for the Doncaster Handicap. The last horse to take out the George Ryder Stakes – Doncaster Handicap double was Vision And Power in 2009.

Other terrific milers to back up their George Ryder Stakes victory with a win in the Doncaster Handicap were Haradasun (2007) and Racing To Win (2006).

There are many excellent lead-up races to the George Ryder Stakes held earlier in the autumn at Sydney including the Group 2 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) in March and the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm.

Rosehill Gardens Racecourse

The Rosehill Gardens Racecourse where the annual George Ryder Stakes is traditionally held has become a mecca for horse racing fans all across Australia. Every fan throughout the continent is familiar with this iconic track that was purchased by the Sydney Turf Club in 1943. The venue was promptly turned into one of Australia’s premier racecourses and it wasn’t too long after that it would gain its reputation of being one of the quirkiest tracks boasting several oddities that have made it known as being a one of a kind specialist track. Perhaps the main reason that this course was so suitable for the George Ryder Stakes and is so popular among race fans is due to its long track that is ideal for both distance and sprint racing.

Many horse racing enthusiasts rave about the tracks ability to give the upper hand to the pace setters in the George Ryder Stakes. This info always ends up affecting the betting odds associated with the famous race. This mainly comes from the Rosehill Garden’s 20-meter wide track, which often allows the early leaders to get an advantage when others possibly get pinched or pinned to the rails early on. Although, this doesn’t make the early leader a clear winner as the 408 meter stretch often provides the horses that become back runners the ability to catch up and make a pass. These are the exact dynamics that always make the George Ryder Stakes such an incredibly exciting race. It’s also the reason that so many Aussies swear its one of the best races in the world possibly even rivalling the famous Kentucky Derby.
