Adelaide No Certainty for 2015 George Ryder Stakes

March 17th, 2015

Racing Manager of Coolmore Australia James Bester has revealed talented import Adelaide will not run in Saturday’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) should the Rosehill Gardens track be rain affected.

Yet to finish outside the places over his impressive eight start career so far, Adelaide has not been seen at the races since charging home to take out the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in what was his maiden Australian start on October 25th.

Confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Ryan Moore should he accept into the 2015 George Ryder Stakes final field, Bester told Racing Ahead the team is pleased with the condition of the Galileo entire, but are wary of his less-than impressive performance on damp tracks in recent Sydney barrier trials.

“This is a horse that needs to hear his feet rattle to be effective and just the way the weather is in Sydney at the moment with soft tracks, it’s far from a certainty,” Bester said.

Aidan O’Brien has always told us and we’ve observed that firm ground is what this horse wants.

“We saw him trial on heavy 10 at Warwick Farm and he just doesn’t unleash the acceleration of which he’s capable of when the track conditions are soft or heavy.

“Ryan knows him well and obviously he and the horse get on very well,” he said.

“He’ll actually have a sit on him tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at Breakfast with the Stars at Rosehill and that will give us an opportunity to hear his feedback on exactly where the horse is at this preparation.

“It’s very difficult to improve on any horse that’s been in Aidan O’Brien’s care but he certainly looks fabulous and we’re delighted with the horse’s condition, the way he’s working and everybody is absolutely thrilled with the way he’s adapted to Australia.

“I know that his trials haven’t been sparkling but they were over 900 and 1200m and that kind of tempo is something that the horse isn’t used to.

Hugh Bowman has been riding him and has been delighted with the way the horse feels, is moving and how he looks.”

A standout performer through 2014, Adelaide finished second in the Group 2 Prix Hocquart (2200m) in France first-up; taking out the Group 3 Gallinule Stakes (2012m) before running second in each of the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes (2414m) and Group 1 Belmont Derby (2011m).

Breaking through for a maiden Group 1 victory in the Secretariat Stakes (2011m) in Chicago on August 16th, Adelaide returned to France for third in the Group 2 Prix Niel (2400m) in his only other start prior to the Cox Plate.

The 2015 George Ryder Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
