Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller has four nominations for the George Ryder Stakes 2016 led by star mare Winx ahead of his shot at a fourth win in the Golden Slipper Stakes Day classic on Saturday.
One of five elite level races at Rosehill Gardens on the weekend, this year’s $1 million Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) attracted 11 early entries on Monday with nominations extended until 11am (AEDT) on Tuesday.
Leading the current George Ryder Stakes nominations is Street Cry four-year-old Winx who comes of her fourth Group 1 victory in the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on February 27.
Her last Rosehill run produced a first-up win in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) back in September last year, since when she’s won three Group 1 features.
Winx has the class and gun lead-up, plus she is prepared by three-time George Ryder Stakes winning horseman Waller who has previously taken out the weight-for-age feature with Danleigh (2010), Rangirangdoo (2011) and Metal Bender (2012).
Heading towards a run in the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 2, Winx is out to become the first filly or mare to win the George Ryder Stakes since Heat Of The Moment way back in 1986.
Waller’s other entries are three-year-old Counterattack, his Doncaster Mile winner last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival coming off a good first-up third in the Canterbury Stakes Kermadec and his dual Group 1 winning colt Press Statement.
A three-year-old son of Hinchinbrook out to become the first of his age since Pierro (2013) to win the George Ryder Stakes, Press Statement suffered a shock loss second-up in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).
He was the odds-on favourite but beaten home by the Kris Lees-trained Le Romain who is also in the George Ryder Stakes mix on the weekend with the last Randwick Guineas – George Ryder double winner being Weekend Hussler (2008).
Also out to break the mares’ hoodoo along with Winx are Tinto for Rex Lip and First Seal for John Thompson, both also Group 1 winners out to beat the boys.
The other headline nominee though is the Murray Baker-trained Turn Me Loose, a gun four-year-old from New Zealand who is a dual Group 1 winner down under including a last start Futurity Stakes success over 1400m at Caulfield.
