Only eight runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens, but the exceptional depth of talent underlines the race as a particularly lucrative one from a betting standpoint.
Winx has returned to racing in typically slick form this time and is a deserving $1.65 favourite in 2016 George Ryder Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Press Statement ($5) and Turn Me Loose ($7.50).
Will Winx continue her undefeated streak through the 2016 George Ryder Stakes or will one of her talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Winx was undoubtedly the standout performer for Chris Waller in 2015 and will be tough to beat under the conditions of the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill this weekend. Capping a strong autumn and winter campaign with success in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), the Street Cry mare resumed in spring for consecutive wins in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) before mustering a career-best performance to win the Cox Plate (2040m) with complete ease in late October. Having won each of the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) this time, Winx will be partnered by regular hoop Hugh Bowman and will carry a very-manageable 57kgs.
Turn Me Loose ($8)
Kiwi raider Turn Me Loose carries winning form into the George Ryder Stakes and historically improve the further into a preparation he gets. Stamping himself as a serious racehorse through a maiden Australian campaign in spring, the Iffraaj gelding ran second in the Listed Paris Lane Stakes (1400m) before returning to winning form in the Listed Seymour Cup (1600m). Continuing with success in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m), Turn Me Loose delivered a strong field defeat in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 7th. Having tuned up for fourth in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) first-up this time, Turn Me Loose charged home to win the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) most recently.
First Seal ($9)
Talented mare First Seal has already posted several strong results this time, is treated well in the weights and will leave from barrier 5 with Blake Shinn aboard in the George Ryder Stakes. A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2014 edition of the Flight Stakes (1600m), First Seal continued to impress through a 2015 autumn campaign without managing to post a second win at the highest level. Unlucky to miss the entire 2015 Spring Carnival through injury, the Fastnet Rock mare resumed this time for success in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) before finishing second in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) a fortnight ago.
