Winning jockey Hugh Bowman had another armchair ride to steer Winx to her second George Ryder victory and her eleventh Group 1 win.

Bowman settled Winx near the tail of the small George Ryder field and started to move forward passing the 800m mark.

The leading Group 1 jockey still hadn’t flinched on the glamour mare on the home turn as she cruised to the lead and while Le Romain ($10) tried to go with her in the heavy conditions, Winx ($1.26 favourite) powered away to record a seven and a quarter lengths win.

The Team Hawkes trained Chautauqua ($9) with Tommy Berry in the saddle weaved his way through the field to run into third position, eight and a half lengths behind Winx.

Trainer Chris Waller will give Winx one more run during the 2017 Sydney Autumn Carnival and she will line up in the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 8, day two of ‘The Championships’.

“The Queen Elizabeth is where we want her,” Waller said.

“It is good to see her win like that. I didn’t expect her to win like that. She is just an amazing horse.”

“His only instructions (to Hugh Bowman) were to keep her safe and that is holding her together and fortunately she races well like that.”

“Like all horses, you have to see how they come through the run. Running on heavy tracks is a lot harder than on good tracks. We have to be mindful of that.”

Bowman was mindful that Winx will be stepping up to 2000m at her next start in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and he did shake her up a little bit in the run to the line.

“I expected a little bit more tempo early but she was much more switched on this afternoon compared to her first two runs and I knew on the way to the barriers before the race that she meant business today,” Bowman said.

“She could have won with plenty in hand but we are going to a bigger target next time, the Queen Elizabeth is the signature race of The Championships, and she will be going from 1500m to 2000m, three weeks in between runs.”

“I felt it was an important exercise to really push her to the line.”
